01 / TEST PERFORMANCE

Measured Performance.Documented Results.

ASTM E84 evaluates flame spread and smoke development under standardized laboratory conditions. These two indexes provide essential information for reviewing interior finish materials.

FLAME SPREAD INDEX✓ WITHIN CLASS A
5 / 25

Flame Spread Performance

A Flame Spread Index of 5 is below the Class A maximum of 25. This index measures relative flame travel across the exposed material surface during the test.

Reported FSI: 5Class A limit: 25
025

Lower FSI values represent less relative surface flame spread under the test conditions.

SMOKE DEVELOPED INDEX✓ WITHIN CLASS A
300 / 450

Smoke Development Performance

A Smoke Developed Index of 300 is within the Class A limit of 450. This index evaluates relative smoke generation during the standardized test.

Reported SDI: 300Class A limit: 450
0450

Smoke development is evaluated separately from the flame spread measurement.

These charts compare the reported indexes with their respective Class A maximum values. They do not represent percentages of fire resistance or overall fire safety.

02 / FIRE CLASSIFICATION

Understanding Class A, B and C

IBC interior finish classification criteria use the following flame spread and smoke development limits for materials evaluated under ASTM E84 or UL 723.

ClassificationFlame Spread IndexSmoke Developed Index
AClass ATested AcousticMod PET felt values fall in this range0 to 25Reported FSI: 50 to 450Reported SDI: 300
BClass B26 to 750 to 450
CClass C76 to 2000 to 450

Important: The reported specimen results meet the Class A numerical criteria. This comparison is not a separate product certificate, a fire resistance rating or an approval of every AcousticMod product.

03 / FIRE TESTING EXPLAINED

What Is ASTM E84?

ASTM E84, commonly called the Steiner Tunnel Test, is a standard test method used in the United States to evaluate the surface burning characteristics of building materials.

It measures relative flame spread and smoke development under controlled laboratory conditions. These values help architects and project teams evaluate materials against applicable requirements.

01

Specimen Preparation

The laboratory prepares and mounts the specimen according to the applicable test method.

02

Standardized Fire Exposure

Flame travel and smoke development are evaluated during controlled laboratory testing.

03

Laboratory Test Report

Flame Spread Index and Smoke Developed Index values are documented for the tested material.

04 / TECHNICAL DOCUMENTATION

Know Exactly What Was Tested.

Specimen identification and test conditions are critical when reviewing laboratory results for architectural specifications and commercial submittals.

09 / FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ASTM E84 Questions and Answers

Common questions from architects, contractors and customers evaluating fire tested acoustic materials.

What is ASTM E84 fire testing?+

ASTM E84 is a laboratory test method that evaluates surface burning characteristics. It measures relative flame spread and smoke development and reports these results as FSI and SDI values.

What does Class A mean under ASTM E84?+

Class A corresponds to a Flame Spread Index of 0 to 25 and a Smoke Developed Index of 0 to 450 under the referenced IBC interior finish classification criteria.

Does the tested AcousticMod PET felt meet Class A criteria?+

Yes. The reported Intertek results for the identified Base Light Grey PET felt specimen are FSI 5 and SDI 300. Both values meet the numerical Class A criteria.

Is Class A the same as fireproof or noncombustible?+

No. Class A describes surface burning classification criteria. It does not mean the material is fireproof, noncombustible or approved for all installation conditions.

Does ASTM E84 provide a one hour fire rating?+

No. A one hour fire resistance rating is associated with a different type of testing for fire resistance rated building assemblies. ASTM E84 evaluates surface burning characteristics.

Do the results apply to every AcousticMod product?+

Not automatically. The documented test values apply to the identified specimen. Other product constructions, colors, thicknesses, adhesives and finished assemblies require confirmation of applicable documentation.

Does Intertek provide a separate Class A certificate?+

Intertek has confirmed that the laboratory test report is the final deliverable for this testing process. A separate Class A certificate is not issued.

Can ASTM E84 results be used for commercial submittals?+

Laboratory reports may be reviewed during architectural material selection and project submittals. Their acceptance depends on applicable building codes, the actual installation and project requirements.

What is the difference between ASTM E84 and NRC?+

ASTM E84 measures surface burning characteristics. NRC stands for Noise Reduction Coefficient and describes sound absorption performance. They evaluate different material properties.

How can I request the AcousticMod test report?+
